Bicycle Accidents

Los Angeles Bicycle Accident Attorney

Each year, many bicyclists experience injuries in accidents, some that produce serious complications and impairments.

In addition to speeding, some of the common causes of bicycle accidents in California include:

  • Careless or inattentive driving
  • Colliding with oncoming vehicles
  • Debris located in the middle of the road
  • Driving/riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Making illegal left or U-turns
  • Motor vehicle operators who allow bicyclists insufficient space to pass
  • Motor vehicle operators who illegally enter bike lanes
  • Opening a car door without paying attention to approaching bicyclists
  • Poorly marked construction sites
  • Running red lights

Motor Vehicle Operators Giving Space for Bicyclists

California Vehicle Code Section 21670 (also referred to as “The California three Feet for Safety Act”) requires motor vehicle drivers who pass bicyclists to do so at a safe distance, without interfering with the safe operation of the bicycle. This law requires motor vehicle operators to allow a three-foot buffer between vehicles when passing. If the driver cannot provide this distance due to weather or traffic conditions, he/she must slow to a reasonable speed and can only pass if doing so would not endanger the bicyclist.

Drivers Entering Bicycle Lanes

Motor vehicle operators frequently wonder when it is okay to enter a bicycle lane. California Vehicle Code Section 21209 restricts motor vehicle operators from entering bike lanes except when the driver parks in the lane, enters or leaves the road, or prepares to turn within 200 feet from an intersection.
